Personal Post- Roman Wall Hike

July 17, 2014

I was pretty embarrassed to admit recently  that having lived only a stone's throw from the Roman wall my entire life, I had never actually set foot along it... except maybe for one rainy school trip 20-odd years ago.

So on a very, very hot day this summer (which also happened to be my birthday) I decided to take the day off and go hiking with my parents. We couldn't have picked a better day for it, the visibility was perfect and you could see for miles and miles each way along the wall. We began at Housesteads Fort and walked west along the wall as far as sycamore gap. I've always been curious about sycamore gap as it was the Northumberland location made famous at the beginning of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (which I love!!!). As I stood back waiting for other walkers to disappear out of sight so I could take a few pictures I could just imagine Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman jumping over the wall hotly persued by a pack of deer hounds.....they didn't though. Instead, just a loved up couple trying their best to take a selfie in front of the famous tree.

Luckily I remembered to take my camera along and the views were so incredibly stunning that I thought I'd share a few. We even managed a family selfie by doing the old self-timer trick with the camera balance on a dry stone wall!
